After the Good Friday Agreement, Sinn Fein were electorally successful. Politically motivated republicans had an organisation to joint and a clear path to power.

By contrast the Loyalists were not electorally successful - the UDP and PUP had only very limited success. PUP had 2 seats, David Ervine and Billy Hutchinson, while the UDP had none. Unionism was not focussed on the future of Loyalism and the battle between the UUP and DUP for votes was deemed more important than the future of the working class loyalist areas. Marching disputes such as Drumcree were just another stupid distraction. The UDP and PUP were seen by the DUP and UUP as political opponents and there was little incentive to work with them.

I remember my wife half-heartedly asking me to consider joining the PUP, not because I had link with the UVF, but as a way of helping working class unionists move away from violence. I was a secondary school teacher in Lisburn at that time and had pupils in my classes from Loyalist backgrounds. I was politically interested in the prospects for peace. However, such a move seemed too risky at that time.

I fear that we are just putting off the inevitable. The UDA and UVF are crime gangs and will not go away until the pressure from policing becomes severe.

I felt today's Talkback program was more likely to delay the disbandment of the UDA and UVF, because if someone is talking about funding you to encourage disbandment in two years time, you would be daft to do it for free today.
